Sketchbook - Jim Palmiotti

This is the first sketch in my second sketchbook, and the only sketch I got at this particular convention. It was one of the Seattle ComiCard shows, only a few months after my first San Diego convention, so I was a little sketched-out. I went to the show partly to see Amanda Conner again, who had told me at San Diego that she'd be in Seattle in September. She did a sketch of herself as Green Lantern for my husband's sketchbook.

As a reminder: Almost every sketch in my sketchbook was non-commissioned and done on the floor of a con. These are not the best works of the artists. These are only representative of what the artist can do under pressure in a loud, crowded, and often stressed-out environment. Most of them were done as quickly as possible, to prevent huge lines from forming. Don't judge any of these artists negatively by the artwork you see, instead be as impressed as I am by what they accomplished in far-from-ideal conditions.

To see all the sketches I have permission to post so far, check out my Sketchbook Page. If you have any contact information for any of the other artists I'm trying to contact, please e-mail me. Click for a random Aquaman sketch.

The Saturday Sketch ™ is brought to you by the letters "J", "P" and the number "27", and also courtesy the fine artists who pour their lives into producing wonderful comic books, then come to conventions only to get asked by geeky fangirls for a sketch of Aquaman. Support an artist, buy a comic book.

Shopping.

So, I used to silently make fun of people who got up early on the day after Thanksgiving to go bargain hunting. But this year, hubby-Eric suggested that we get up early and go bargain hunting at Fry's, as we both need new computer mouses. So we got up early. And went to Fry's. Which was a madhouse. And I got a $4 optical mouse. Yay. Now I wanna go back to bed. Too bad I need to go to work.

I'm Thankful For...

...my husband. Eric and I have been together over ten years now.

...my family on both sides.

...my friends on-line, especially my fellow comic book bloggers who understand my obsessions and aren't judgemental.

...my home, my car, my books, my LEGO, my comic books, and all those other fun little material things that make life interesting.

...the internet. Seriously, just think about how much the internet has improved life for some of us. I can't help but be thankful for it.

...free speech, the constitution, and civil rights. I'm glad that I live in a country that strives for freedom and equality for all, and I hope it can weather the storm.

Let's See...

Tomorrow is a holiday, so I suspect most folks are off visiting family or something, in the US at least. I got my comics, but I don't feel like reviewing them yet. And I'm still recovering from my nasty cold, so I'll just write nothing today and leave it at that...

What's that? This is something? Oh well.

Happy Doctor Who Day!

Happy Doctor Who Day! Yes, 41 years ago today, the first ever episode of Doctor Who aired. And the new show is coming soon... and they haven't forgotten the past:

I can't overstate the importance of this TV show to my life, since it is because of my interest in the show that I met and fell in love with hubby-Eric. It's also been a constant presence in my life since then.

Random Thoughts

A searchable database of comic book covers. Not huge, but they could be useful in finding that one cover... if you know the name of the book. Via Boing Boing.

Dolphins Rock.

Season sets of The Muppet Show are reportedly on the way. I WANT THESE.

Need a warning sticker for your local textbook, so children don't blindly believe whatever is written in the book? Look no further! Here's a whole page of useful warning stickers.

(sarcasm full-on) After all, children always pay much more attention to what they read in a book than to what the responsible adults in their life tell them, so you must always protect them from anything that might be different from your beliefs instead of trusting them to use their God-given intelligence. (sarcasm off)

Cool "ghost story" from William Gibson's blog.

Various Thoughts

I wasn't going to blog again today, but I found some fun links to play with, so I figured I'd share. I can't seem to get away from blogging for long.

Mike Sterling tells the story of Clark Kent, disc jockey. (oops, link fixed)

The Hopkin Green Frog mystery is explained. Oddly enough, by someone trying to help.

Christopher Priest talks about the latest blow-up in basketball, and I generally agree with him: "Personally, I think alcohol should not be sold at sporting events, period."

Polite Scott also likes Dorothy of Oz.

Oh My. The George Takei Soundboard. Via V&S.

Chocolate cures coughs. Yup. "The study found that theobromine, found in cocoa, was nearly a third more effective in stopping persistent coughs than codeine, currently considered the best cough medicine." Chocolate, the wonder drug. Via Gallimaufry.

Hubby-Eric has updated his blog with the current situation in his life, so if you're curious, go read there.

Hrm...

Is California Sinking? Then, 30+ years later, down it goes!

The Silver Age story (Aquaman #53, Oct-Sep 1970) is a wonderfully goofy one featuring one Eliot Harlanson (no, I am not making this up) a California millionaire who is convinced by agents of O.G.R.E. (Organization for General Revenge and Enslavement) that Atlantis is rising and California will sink as "nature's way of keeping things in their proper balance." In order to protect his home, Harlanson is convinced to buy and drop an A-Bomb on Atlantis. Black Manta gets involved in the fun, as do some amazingly capable US government agents.

At the end of the story, Aqualad asks Aquaman about the chances of Atlantis rising, but Aquaman isn't worried. He says that Atlantis won't reach the surface until "way after" the year 2000. Hmmm. I wonder how much "way" is in years?
